cantor were all there as well. i don't think that the speaker john boehner was there. people like joe scarborough have written and spoken out strongly on how the republican party after the defeat of mitt romney has to rebuild itself, has to reach out to hispanics, to other minorities, to women. what is your take on how the republican party immediate to be more inclusive, if you think it does? >> i think we need to do a much better job connecting and the policy that is flow from liberty and freedom and self-responsibility and entrepreneurship and enterprise and connect that to the opportunity that is available for all americans. i don't distinguish between women and minorities. i think everybody should have the same access and the same opportunities, which are diminished across the board. everybody goes down when the government takes more and makes more decisions for people. we do have to go into communities and explain how getting free contraception, take a woman's issue, is not our duty to post airport. our duty to post airport is to insure the next generation, whether there are

republican party. john boehner has an 18% approval rating. the tea party, 9% approval rating. this is a movement, this is a party in retreat and that's why the president did what he did yesterday. >> let's look at that. best case scenario would be to have two strong parties and a great national conversation and great sense of balance. i understand how you could read the speech as i won, ha-ha, and also, could be seen as this is what the country is telling me. how do we get the other points of view in there. maybe perhaps -- this is the hard part, extract what i think is dying and what i think you think is dying, that is the extremist part of that. >> the extreme part of the republican party is in retreat and just as bill buckley chased john birchers out of the conservative movement in the 1960s, so, too, will these extremists be chased out of the mainstream of the republican party. they will evolve or they will die. it's that simple. i'm not so sure the president can say, katty kay, this is what the american people talked about and told me during the campaign. the president didn't

successful that even john boehner will consider becoming a democrat. after all, we have a lot in common. he is a person of color. although not a color that appears in the natural world. leaders of the republican party, they call the passage of this bill armageddon. end of freedom as we know it. so after i sign the bill, i looked around to see if there were any asteroids falling or sudden cracks opening up in the earth. turned out it was a nice day. they said we needed to triple the border patrol. well, now they're going to say we need to quadruple the border patrol or they'll want a higher fence. maybe they will need a moat. maybe they want alligators in the moat. lots of ups, lots of downs, except for my approval ratings which have just gone down. but that's politics. it doesn't bother me. besides, i happen to know that my approval ratings are still very high in the country of my birth. he seems all-american, but if you heard his real middle name, tim hosni pawlenty, what a shame. governor romney has said that he hoped a similar version of this plan from last year would be introduced as a

themselves or to others. >> what path do you see forward? speaker john boehner has said the senate needs to act first on this gun legislation, but senator harry reid is not going to take the lead, he's going too leave it to others. he's concerned about constituents from more moderate states, more rural states, so how does this get moved forward? >> i did hear senator harry reid's comments that he was going to bring up things only that he could get through the house. i would hope that senator harry reid would bring lettingation to the floor of the senate. i hope speaker boehner will allow some of these measures to come to the floor. in the past he has said he would only bring things to the floor that had a majority of his majority. but just recently, we did see speaker boehner bring the fiscal cliff measure to the floor that didn't have the joerts of his republican support. he also brought the sandy relief aid bill to the floor that didn't have the majority of the republicans, but it did have bipartisan majority support, both on the fiscal cliff issue and the sandy issue. so if the speake

no appetite for this and john boehner has said that republicans will review these proposals. do you think it's just lip service from the right that we're getting, okay, that the american people are hearing that they're going to take a look at this, but they don't really mean it? >> certainly there are some in the gop who are giving us lip service and they just want the thing to die down and go away quietly and they figure the more they can stall, the better their chances. but there are some who aren't going to step forward, moderate gop member who is aren't going to co-sponsor an assault weapon ban or a bill to provide yuan versus wall background checks. that if they actually vote on it, they will hear from their constituents, quite frankly they would rather not have to vote on this so it would be fine if this got put off indefinitely. but if the president is successful and i think he's got a real chance here doing what he does best, going out to the american public, i think these modern gop members and waving democratic members can be kept in line and we can pass some of these very

the president of the united states. unfortunately, there's no one who will do that. not speaker john boehner, not mitch mcconnell, not everyone mitt romney who was the party for the presidency. >> now, jonathan, when you look at this, the birther movement hasn't gone anywhere. they're still going strong. there's been 100 court cases filed to prevent the inauguration ceremony monday siting obama's over-seas birth. and i wonder where that gop base got the idea from that the president wasn't born here. it certainly wasn't just don trump. look at this. >> no one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. they know that this is the place that we were born and raised. >> all i can tell you is ha the general consensus is that he has produced a birth certificate. the question is is it legitimate? >> this is the easiest problem to solve. all the president has to do is show it. >> so why is this important? because if you dehumanize the president, if you made him un-american, you've made him other, then you don't deal with him because he's not american, he's not really le jit. if you're constitu

leaders are under water. john boehner especially back, upside down by 19 points on the rating and the republican party's negative rating, 49%, is at the all-time high for the gop during obama's presidency. just 26% see the party in a positive light. the gop lost the most ground with self described republicans. the tea party also has its lowest rating ever, positive views of the tea party, they have dropped to just 23%. joining me now while i get a glass of water after those numbers, nbc news senior political editor mark murray. listen. not to chew on again, but mark, why i like the segments is based on numbers. questions to what we assume are average voters out there and getting a glimpse of what these people both feel about their own personal situations and what some might call the shenanigans in d.c. >> the context is very important here, tamron. this is after the fiscal cliff fight we had right over the new year and also comes after the tragic shootings in newtown, connecticut. and of course, sets up president obama's inauguration, officially comes on monday. and he will be con

americans like him. he has a 52% approval rating. john boehner has an 18% approval rating. those are pretty good numbers. and i think also there are glimmers of hope for those of us who believe the president has stayed on his side of pennsylvania avenue too much. he said over the past week or two, his daughters are getting older, they don't like hanging around dad as much anymore. >> he's lonely. >> he's lonely. the president used to tell anybody that would listen, i work and then i go upstairs and i'm with my family. you can't trivialize the fact that he is talking about reaching out more not just to republicans, but we hear the same complaints from democratic senators the as well, and it is a really good sign to get things done. with we have to make this city work again. >> tom's point, the perils of a second term, you have thought about this and talked to the president about it. how does he map out these next four years? >> first of all, i want to say i appreciate the priorities that tom laid out. but there's a larger priority of which this is part, which is how do you create an economy,
